Job Summary:

The Specialty Pharmacy Manager is responsible for overseeing all the patient activities for the Oncology programs at the Ontario Specialty Pharmacy. The Specialty Pharmacy Manager provides the oversight and management of the activities of the Pharmacists as well as the compounding team comprising of Aseptic Pharmacy Coordinators and Aseptic Technicians that support Oncology and Compounded drugs and products. The individual will report into the Director, Pharmacy and support the overall performance and success of the pharmacy in alignment with the vision and priorities of Biopharma & Provider Solutions. The incumbent must make a difference by leading and developing pharmacists, aseptic coordinators, and aseptic technicians to build accountability, drive business results, and provide exceptional patient care.They will drive excellence in Oncology care to McKesson Pharmacy patients and be the designated point of contact for Oncology programs supported by the Pharmacists team. They will also oversee activities related to compounding of non-hazardous and hazardous sterile preparations, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards such as NAPRA and Provincial standards. This role requires expertise in aseptic techniques, knowledge of pharmaceutical compounding regulations, preparation and dispensing of Oncology products, and the ability to train and lead a team in a sterile environment. The Specialty Pharmacy Manager will serve as back-ups for other Supervisors or Managers as required.

Section A – Specific Responsibilities:

  • Managing direct reports, namely Aseptic Coordinators, Aseptic Technicians, and Pharmacists.

  • Overseeing recruitment, hiring, onboarding, and training of new employees.

  • Promoting ongoing team development through coaching and conducting quarterly performance evaluations.

  • Oversight of all processes related to the dispensing of all medications for Oncology programs at Ontario McKesson Specialty Pharmacy.

  • Accountable for being the designated liaison with the Provider and Program POCs for various programs and addressing concerns.

  • Meeting or exceeding metrics and deadlines set by program Service Level Agreements (SLAs) for programs that fall under their portfolio.

  • Managing external and internal service compliance, identifying risk and compliance opportunities, and assisting in assessing and mitigating identified risks while being accountable to corporate risk and other compliance functions.

  • Conducting root cause and trend analysis and developing process improvements.

  • Collaborating with the team to implement creative solutions to daily workflow challenges and temporary labour shortages.

  • Maintaining program Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), exceptions processes, workflows, scripting, training, and reports.

  • Promotes and ensures that the highest quality of care is provided to patients.

  • Providing regular feedback to the Director, Pharmacy regarding quality, operational, technical, or process issues and recommending corrective actions or engaging additional resources if needed.

  • Overseeing employee scheduling and resource allocation based on forecasted demand to ensure effective and efficient departmental service levels.

  • Supporting the Director, Pharmacy in policy and practice development, responding per policy direction, and seeking assistance for unusual situations or staff non-compliance.

  • Prepare and maintain all required reports and records including cleaning logs, equipment logs, and inventory logs. Ensuring all logs are completed and filled accordingly.

  • Maintaining a safe and clean work environment by following current standard operating procedures; complying with legal regulations; and monitoring the environment.

  • Reviewing and ensuring deviation and other quality assurance reports associated with the controlled work environment/personnel are filed accordingly. 

  • Develop, review, and update manufacturing records (MFRs)/batching records for all compounded sterile preparations.

  • Ensure that the daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning of the controlled work environment and the primary engineering controls are carried out as per established Standard Operating Procedures. 

  • Acting as a sterile compounding supervisor as per NAPRA standards and overseeing all activities related to compounding of Hazardous and Non-Hazardous sterile preparations, as designated by the Director, Pharmacy and outlined in NAPRA.

  • Develop and oversee an environmental monitoring program.

  • Managing all aspects of Master Formulation and Risk Assessments.

  • Participate and respond to all audit requirements and complete actions promptly.

  • Manage and report on financials and inventory related to aseptic compounding.

  • Operate and promote behaviors that uphold McKesson i2Care and iLead Principles.

  • Ability to perform tasks beyond the specific responsibilities of a Pharmacy Manager and adapting, as necessary.

Section B – Key Requirements: 

Experiences:

  • Oncology experience required.

  • 1-3 years of pharmacy management experience preferred.

  • 3-5 years of experience working as a clinical pharmacist.

  • Aseptic compounding experience is an asset.

Knowledge:

  • Bachelor or Doctor of Pharmacy Degree.

  • A valid Pharmacist Part A license in good standing with the applicable College of Pharmacists.

  • Possess strong working knowledge of Kroll and its capabilities.

  • Knowledge of pharmaceutical compounding techniques and sterile compounding guidelines associated with compounding of hazardous, non-hazardous, and high-risk sterile preparations is an asset.

  • Must know NAPRA/USP 797 standards. 

Skills and Abilities:

  • Time management skills.

  • Excellent customer service and be able to set the same expectations from the team.

  • Must be able to work independently, with minimum supervision.

  • Accountable and results oriented.

  • Leadership skills, can lead, inspire, mentor, develop, and guide a team.

  • Working knowledge of retail pharmacy practice.

  • Understanding of biologics and specialty medications.

  • Clinical expertise in major therapeutic areas required by Specialty Pharmacy Services.

  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.

This is determined by several factors, including performance, experience and skills, equity, regular job market evaluations, and geographical markets. In addition to base pay, other compensation, such as an annual bonus or long-term incentive opportunities may be offered.

Our Base Pay Range for this position

$78,600 - $131,000
