Purpose

The Biologics Patient Access Services organization is the “doorway to Biologics” and facilitates the efficient and effective on-boarding of patients and processing of prescriptions including performing benefits investigation, prior authorization and appeals, insurance overrides, financial assistance, claims processing for patients, and transitioning patients to bridge and/or PAP access that enables a patient to receive their critical therapy.

The Supervisor, Patient Access Services is a critical leader responsible for ensuring our processes and employees are equipped to eliminate insurance and financial barriers.  This role is responsible for developing our employees, continuously improving our processes/systems, building a metrics package to inform us of the health of the business, and achieving our targets.  The Supervisor will set expectations, hold the department accountable, and ensure we have highly repeatable processes that ensure best in class quality, service, operational excellence, and engage their employees.

The candidate must exhibit strong influencing skills that effectively motivate employees to provide outstanding customer service.  They should also possess a strong attention to detail, excellent communication and organizational skills, and a problem-solving mentality.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The primary role of the Supervisor, Patient Access Services fall into three specific categories:

  • Develop and maintain an organization with a passion for customer service and ongoing quality improvement.

    • Instill a culture of going above and beyond to exceed the patient, provider, and client expectations.

    • Encourage and promote a collaborative environment.

  • Provide oversight and ongoing management for the copay assistance and PAP functions.

    • Provide leadership and direction to the Patient Access team that is reflective of the philosophy of Biologics. 

    • Uses a proactive leadership style to model and promote culture of trust and communication.

    • Proactively evaluate people, process, and technology improvement to enhance Biologics’ ability to improve customer satisfaction.

    • Responsible for the effective implementation of operational and organizational enhancements.  Seeks suggestions and input from staff and promotes active participation of all staff in decisions that affect them.

    • Responsible for monitoring and tracking results that focus on improved performance and personnel effectiveness.

    • Coordinates and supervises the daily activities of a team or like teams of employees in the professional, business support and/or operations support career streams.

    • Coordinates work activities with other supervisors.

    • Identify and report adverse events (AEs) and product complaints (PCs) to clinicians.

    • Responsible for hiring, firing, performance appraisals, pay reviews.

    • Typically, does not spend more than 20% of time performing the same work as those supervised.

  • Promote ongoing staff training and development.

    • Ensure compliance to SOPs, contractual, Federal, and State regulatory requirements.

    • Responsible for the development of staff improvement plans that enhance personal and professional development. Coordinates and supervises the daily activities of a team or like teams of employees in the professional, business support and/or operations support career streams.

Qualifications/Requirements

Minimum Requirements:

  • 5+ years of experience working and understanding insurance eligibility, prior authorization, copay assistance, and patient assistance programs (PAP) to meet the patient’s needs to access critical medication.

  • 1+ years of people leadership experience.

Critical Skills:

  • Knowledge of healthcare terminology and experience in a healthcare environment.

  • Innovative mindset always seeking continuous improvement through use of various techniques (Six Sigma, Lean, …)

  • A servant leader that is highly motivated and committed to building an engaged workforce.

  • A change agent that can lead their staff through the change management curve.

  • Strong organizational skills, ability to prioritize and work under pressure to “Get Stuff Done.”

  • Excellent customer service skills.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications.

Additional Skills:

  • Experience developing project and business plans.

  • Collaborative and willing to learn new things to go above and beyond expectations.

  • A change agent that can lead their staff through the change management curve.

  • Great communicator up and down the corporate ladder.

  • Knowledge of current patient access systems that can help improve productivity and quality.

Education:

  • Associate degree or higher or equivalent experience.

Physical Conditions:

  • Travel up to 10%

  • Biologics by McKesson has two pharmacies, one located in Cary, NC and the second in Fort Worth TX. Candidates for this role are expected to work in the office as needed in either of the locations.
